Model Explanation of Simo’s Z Series DC Motor

Let’s take the model Z355-1A as an example. The letter “Z” represents a DC motor (product series code). “355” indicates the motor’s center height in millimeters. The number “1” after the dash refers to the code for the distance between the foot hole axes (B size), with numbers 1, 2, 3, etc., indicating increasing lengths. “A” signifies the motor category, where “A” and “B” represent the first and second categories of standard motors, respectively.

Overview of Simo’s Z Series DC Motor

The Z Series medium-sized DC motors, with center heights ranging from 355 to 710 mm, are a new product line developed by our company following the Z4 small DC motors. This series meets the JB/T9577-1999 standards and IEC international standards for performance, installation dimensions, and technical requirements. All mechanical dimensions and tolerances conform to ISO standards.

The Simo Z Series DC motors are widely applicable in various industrial sectors, including metallurgy, rolling mills, metal cutting machines, paper making, dyeing and printing, cement, and plastic extrusion machinery.

These motors feature an advanced design with a multi-angular laminated stator frame, which maximizes space utilization, resulting in a compact, lightweight, and high-performance motor. The stator yoke, magnetic poles, and armature cores are all made from high-quality cold-rolled silicon steel sheets, providing excellent magnetic properties. The entire motor also boasts excellent thermal conductivity. This series uses rolling bearings with a structure that allows for lubrication without stopping the motor, and all insulation levels are classified as F grade.

The Z Series Simo motors are compatible with both DC generator sets and static rectifier power supplies. They have low rotational inertia, offering good dynamic performance and the ability to handle high load variation rates, making them particularly suitable for control systems that require smooth speed regulation, high efficiency, automatic speed stabilization, and quick responsiveness.

Installation Types, Protection Grades, and Cooling Methods for Simo’s Z Series DC Motors

  1. The installation type of the Z Series motors complies with the codes in GB/T997 and IEC34-7 for motor structure and installation.
  2. The protection grade of these motors adheres to the GB/T4942 and IEC34-5 standards for motor enclosure protection, offering IP23 and IP44 options.
  3. Cooling methods, following the GB/T1993 and IEC34-6 standards, include four standard methods, with the cooling air inlet located at the drive end (non-commutator end) of the motor. Other protection grades and cooling methods can be negotiated upon request:
    • IC06: External ventilation with a built-in blower (IP23 protection grade).
    • IC17: Cooling air enters through a duct and exits through louvered vents (IP23 protection grade).
    • IC37: Both the cooling air inlet and outlet are ducted (IP44 protection grade).
    • ICW37A86: Fully enclosed with an air/water heat exchanger (IP44 protection grade).
  4. Table 1 lists the required cooling air volume, air pressure, and fan motor power for each frame size.
  5. The terminal box of Simo motors is positioned on the right side of the frame when viewed from the drive end (non-shaft extension end). If a different position is required, this should be specified as a reversed box in the order.

Operating Conditions for Simo’s Z Series DC Motors

  1. The rated power of the motor is based on an altitude of no more than 1,000 meters and an ambient air temperature not exceeding 40°C.
  2. Both the armature and field circuits of this series of motors can operate with controllable power sources, as well as with DC generator sets.
  3. The operating environment should be free from acidic, alkaline, or other gases that could corrode the insulation.
  4. The motors can be installed in harsh environments, but the correct cooling method and protection grade must be chosen to ensure proper operation.
  5. For use in ships, tropical regions, or environments with salt spray or high humidity, additional agreements should be made.
  6. When powered by a static rectifier, the rectifier should have at least six pulses. At rated base speed, voltage, and load current, the peak ripple factor of the power supply should not exceed 10%.

Performance of Simo’s Z Series DC Motors

  1. The basic operating mode for this series is continuous load. Other modes can be arranged by agreement.
  2. The standard rated voltages for this series include 220V, 330V, 440V, 550V, 660V, and 750V. Other voltage levels can be arranged at the time of order.
  3. The basic excitation method for this series is separate excitation, with a standard excitation voltage of 220V. Other excitation voltages can be provided. Forced excitation is allowed, with a maximum excitation voltage of 500V. During forced excitation, the excitation current may briefly exceed the rated value, but it must not exceed the rated value once stabilized.
  4. The short-term overload capacity of these motors is as follows:
    • Type A motors can withstand the overload specified in Table 2 for one minute.
    • Type B motors can withstand the overload specified in Table 3 for one minute.
    • Occasional short-term overload is defined as the motor’s ability to withstand loads exceeding the rated capacity for one minute in emergencies. It is recommended that the instant trip device of the circuit breaker be set according to the occasional short-term overload capacity.
    • Frequent short-term overload is defined as the motor’s ability to repeatedly handle loads exceeding the rated capacity as part of the normal working cycle. After a short-term overload, the motor must run under a light load to ensure that the root mean square value of the entire load cycle does not exceed the rated capacity.
    • Type B motors should be able to operate continuously under the following conditions:
      • Run continuously with a load of 115% of the rated power within the rated armature voltage and speed range, with a temperature rise higher than under rated conditions, and possibly differing characteristics.
      • After continuous operation at rated load, immediately operate with a load of 125% of the rated power for two hours without exceeding the specified temperature rise. Other characteristics may differ from those under rated conditions.
      • Lower overload multiples allow longer overload times. For Type B DC motors, occasional overload multiples of up to 2.5 times (at rated base speed) are allowed for up to 15 seconds (subject to manufacturer consultation).
  5. Speed Regulation Rate:
    • The speed regulation rate for this series is not specified. Special requirements should be negotiated at the time of order.
  6. Rate of Current Change:
    • The current change rate (di/dt) for this series is allowed up to 200 times the rated current per second at any speed and load.
  7. Noise and Vibration:
    • The noise level of the Z Series motors complies with the GB/T10069 “Methods for Measuring and Determining the Limits of Noise Emitted by Rotating Electrical Machines” and IEC34-9 “Standards for Limiting Noise of Electrical Machines.”
    • The vibration levels comply with the GB/T10068 “Methods for Measuring and Determining the Limits of Vibration for Rotating Electrical Machines” and IEC34-14 “Methods for Measuring and Determining the Limits of Vibration for Electrical Machines.”

Selection of Simo’s Z Series DC Motor Capacity

  • Type A: DC Motors
    • Users can select the motor model and specifications according to the required capacity, speed, and voltage.
  • Type B: DC Motors
    • The rated output power of Type B motors is slightly lower than that of Type A motors with the same center height and foot axis length. Other data are generally the same. If the specifications of a Type B motor are known, the Type A specification table can be used to preliminarily select a Type B motor. The rated power of the Type B motor should be increased by about 25% for initial selection. Then, the enlarged power can be used to select the corresponding model and specifications in the Type A specification table, but the model should be changed from A to B, and the corresponding power should remain the original power (i.e., the original power of the Type B motor). The final model and specifications can be agreed upon between the user and the manufacturer.

The conversion relationship is as follows:

  • First, find the data in the same type of technical data table where UN, NN, PN, and derived data are closest to and lower than the new derived power supply voltage, as well as the corresponding rated base speed and rated power. Generally, the higher the voltage, the higher the speed, and the greater the output power, and vice versa.
